When is the market open?

Every Thursday and Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00.

Where is the market?

Within the grounds of the Michael Mount Waldorf School, 40 Culross Road (off Main Road), Bryanston, Johannesburg.

What happens if it rains?

The market opens regardless of weather. Most stalls are under cover. The market only closes if persistent rain results in no customers remaining.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes, on a leash and under owner control. Owners are liable for any damage caused by their dogs.

How does payment work?

All traders use Yoco devices or card machines. Cash is also accepted. If you prefer a single transaction, traders can provide individual invoices payable at the market office.

Are cards accepted?

Yes. All credit and debit cards, as well as SnapScan.

Note: There is no ATM on site.

What do you mean by organic agriculture?

A production system that sustains the health of soil, ecosystems and people — relying on ecological processes and biodiversity rather than harmful inputs. Definition sourced from IFOAM Organics International.

What is certified organic?

A product bearing the mark of an independent third-party organic certifier, confirming the supplier's production practices comply with organic standards.

What is a Participatory Guarantee System (PGS)?

A peer-review organic assurance system developed by IFOAM to support smallholder farmers who cannot afford third-party certification. Bryanston Market operates a well-established PGS, look for PGS signage at participating stalls.

Why are there no cut flowers?

Commercial flower growing uses substantial chemical fertilizers, pesticides and water, this is contrary to the market's organic and natural values.

What is the market's position on GMO?

Bryanston Market supports the precautionary principle on GMOs. We will not knowingly allow GMO products to be sold and actively support our stallholders in identifying GMO-free inputs.

What is the Textile Pledge?

Over 30 textile stallholders pledge to use only sustainable raw materials, support locally based CMT processes, and be open and transparent with customers about their sourcing and production.

How do I apply?

Visit our Apply for a Stall page, complete and submit the form. Your application goes to the Product Selection Committee. If shortlisted, you'll be invited to present your products.

What does a stall cost?

The market charges 17% commission on sales plus 15% VAT on the commission, with a minimum sales levy of R225 per market day. There is also a R25 administration fee per market day. Electrical equipment incurs an additional 0.5% commission on sales.

Are casual traders accepted?

No. Only approved products are sold at the market. Once approved, a three-month temporary contract is issued, followed by an annual trading agreement subject to performance and alignment with market ethos.

What is the market looking for?

Quality self-crafted products made from organic and natural ingredients and materials. Mass-produced goods made of plastic or synthetic materials are not accepted.

How are products selected?

All applications go to the Product Selection Committee. If products meet the criteria, applicants are invited to present to the committee for further discussion.

What products are accepted?

Organically grown crops, free-range animal products, self-produced deli foods, and self-crafted goods including jewellery, clothing, ceramics, pottery, art, homeware, health and wellness products and children's toys.
