A Johannesburg Institution Since 1976
OUR STORY
It started with a bunch of carrots. In 1976, a group of parents from the Michael Mount Waldorf School began selling their organically grown fruit and vegetables in the school car park, even venturing onto the pavement with bunches of carrots to entice passing cars through the gates.
What started as a fundraiser quickly grew into something far greater. Artists, crafters and farmers joined the movement, and the humble car park stall became the Organic Village Market, a vibrant new marketplace at the Culross entrance where teachers, parents and friends could meet, trade and connect.
The market has survived two devastating fires, in 1988 and again in 2008, each time rebuilding with grit, determination and community spirit. Through trestle tables on sports fields and temporary tarpaulins, the market never stopped trading.
Today, Bryanston Organic and Natural Market is a Johannesburg institution, a magical place offering inspired crafts, wholesome food and a community built on conscious living.
1976
A group of Michael Mount Waldorf School parents begin selling organic produce from their car boots, venturing onto the pavement with bunches of carrots to draw in passing traffic.
1988 TO 1989
Disaster strikes on 24 July 1988 when the market is razed by fire. Trading continues on trestle tables under tarpaulins. On 13 December 1989 the rebuilt market reopens as Michael Mount Organic Market.
1990s
The organic movement grows. The market establishes a PGS (Participatory Guarantee System) under IFOAM Organics International to support smallholder farmers and verify organic integrity. The market is renamed Bryanston Organic & Natural Market.
A second fire on 30 May 2008 destroys a large part of the market. Once again rebuilt in record time, rising like a phoenix from the ashes.
